When in Rome in 1847, recovering from a mental breakdown, possibly precipitated by the continuing crisis she experienced regarding her relationship with Milnes, she met Sidney Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Lea, a brilliant politician who had been secretary at war (1845–1846) (a position he would hold again (1852–1854) during the Crimean War).
